SUPPORTERS ARGUE
Athletes have a right and a responsibility to engage in political protests during sporting events to draw attention to controversial issues, including racism and social injustice. Recent actions, such as the decision by some football players to take a knee during the national anthem, have been thoughtful and warranted.
OPPONENTS ARGUE
Athletes should refrain from engaging in political protests during sporting events. Sports provide a common space where all Americans should be able to enjoy entertainment free of partisanship and political bickering. Failing to stand during the national anthem disrespects the flag and veterans.
