Broward College in Davie, FL, is a Films On Demand subscriber. We recently talked with Dan Tan—reference librarian at Broward College—about his favorite part of being a librarian, his library’s most important responsibility, and more.
Tell us one way you’re helping users who may be hesitant to embrace technology to take advantage of your library’s online resources.
We start with technology that our students are already familiar with, such as watching streaming videos and accessing web pages.
What is your favorite part of being a librarian?
My favorite part of being a librarian is working with high school, community college, and university students. You learn something new every day. The other exciting part is the opportunity to collaborate with diverse faculty members.
What do you think is the library’s most important responsibility at your institution?
The mission of the University/College Library is providing instruction and access to the world’s knowledge to enrich our diverse community’s educational experience and foster lifelong learning.
Tell us about your favorite YouTube video/LibGuide, etc., your library has created to promote a resource.
The LTI integration of Infobase resources to our learning management system (D2L) allows our faculty to seamlessly embed library resources such as Films On Demand and Issues & Controversies directly into their course shell.
How do you make sure students and faculty with disabilities or language barriers can easily access your library’s resources?
The University/College Library has updated/converted all web pages and library resources in compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
What role does social media play in your relationship with your patrons?
The library has actively participated in social media and promoting library services and events to the college-wide community.
What do you think is the library’s most important responsibility at your institution?
We believe every student needs the opportunity through discovery, creativity, and critical thinking to succeed in their academic, professional, and life aspirations.
